What could cause leg spasms when sitting or lying down?

Does anyone elso suffer. The spasms are severe and the leg shots out. Its exhusting. Both legs are affected but not at same time. Gets worse when period is due. Any ideas?
Answer:
it sounds like restless leg syndrome there is now meds from your gp you can get that will help,if have no kids and are planning on getting pregnant,it gets worse, ive hhad to eat my dinner while walking around and i was downstairs at 4 in the morning trying to walk off,its very feckin annoying!
Low calcium and/or protien. They"re both needed to keep the muscles strong.
i get leg spasms which come on with abdominal pain and circulatory problems , the legs dont often shoot out but the calf muscles twitch and are loose making it difficult to walk.I try to pre-empt the problem by standing up and moving about all the time but that exhausts me by the end of the day.In my case i believe that it is caused by poor blood supply from the aorta due to compression from the intestine
The most likely cause is a bulging or herniated disc in your lower back. Your physician can give you some exercises that will help some, but you should have it evaluated to see how serious it is. For quick relief, lying down with pillows under your legs so that they are bent at a ninety degree angle to your waist (like if you were sitting in a chair but lying down.)

The fact that it gets worse before your period could also indicate some problem with your circulation, although this would be more likely to cause pain when walking a lot.

Either way, you should have the symptoms looked at.
Restless Leg Syndrome.
it could be muscle cramp, which is a build up of uric acid in the muscle, drink loads of water, also barley water is really good for the kidneys and liver, so drink that also.
Restless legs syndrome is a common, under diagnosed, and treatable condition. Recent research suggests it affects about 10% of adults in North America and Europe with rates increasing with age.
